A life around fields, questions and people.
I am Lawrence Stephen Fayeun, Associate Professor (Reader) in Plant Breeding and Quantitative Genetics in the Department of Crop, Soil and Pest Management, Federal University of Technology, Akure, Nigeria.
My work sits at the intersection of crop improvement, agricultural experimentation, quantitative analysis, research education and technology. I am especially interested in the space between collecting data and making a defensible scientific conclusion. That interest shapes my research, my teaching and the tools I build.
Academic formation
I trained at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, earning a B. Agric. Tech. in 2002 and an M. Agric. Tech. in Crop Management in 2011, before completing a PhD in Plant Breeding at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta in 2015.
From extension work to university teaching
Before my university appointment, my professional path included agricultural extension and community-development work, including service with the Justice, Development and Peace Commission and the World Bank-assisted Ondo State Fadama III Development Project. I joined FUTA as academic staff in 2014. Those years outside the lecture room continue to shape how I think about agricultural research: the field problem should remain visible even when the analysis becomes sophisticated.
A long research thread
Fluted pumpkin (Telfairia occidentalis) has been a sustained research interest for more than two decades. Working with an indigenous crop over time has reinforced an important lesson for me: careful characterisation, sound experimental design and patient accumulation of evidence matter as much as sophisticated analysis.
Teaching & supervision
In the classroom and in postgraduate supervision, I want researchers to move beyond memorising procedures. A strong researcher should be able to connect a research question to the design of an experiment, understand the structure of the data, choose an appropriate analysis, check assumptions, interpret the output and communicate a biological conclusion.
Building
Outside formal university teaching, I work on initiatives that expand access to practical research skills and useful digital systems. Field-to-Insight Academy develops capacity in agricultural research and data analysis; VivaSense is being developed as a platform for agricultural experimentation and scientific interpretation; and Able-Flourish Digital Solutions focuses on practical websites, software systems and digital workflows. I also serve as Editor-in-Chief of Agricultural Innovations.
Professional community
My professional memberships include the Genetics Society of Nigeria, Association of Seed Scientists of Nigeria, Biotechnology Society of Nigeria and African Plant Breeders Association.
Writing & faith
I also write about faith, work, learning, stewardship, technology and lessons that emerge from building things in the real world. This website gives that writing a permanent home without confusing it with the scholarly record.
Elsewhere
Professional training and community learning live through Field-to-Insight Academy. Agricultural analytics and research technology live through VivaSense. Commercial engagements are undertaken through Able-Flourish: Able-Flourish Agro-Services Ltd for agricultural consulting and Able-Flourish Digital Solutions for digital systems.
