Research programmes

Questions that continue beyond a single experiment.

Individual papers answer bounded questions. These programmes describe the longer lines of inquiry that connect experiments, students, collaborators and methods. Funding, role and programme status are stated where they are established.

Programme 01
Ongoing research programme

Fluted pumpkin genetics and improvement

A long-running programme on genetic diversity, marketable leaf yield, seedling variation, floral biology, reproductive biology and landrace characterisation in Telfairia occidentalis. Current work recorded in the CV includes identification and sequencing of the SRY gene in fluted pumpkin.

Extra-early hybrid maize: multi-location and on-farm testing

FUTA-developed extra-early maize hybrids have been evaluated with checks across multiple locations and farmers' fields to assess yield performance, climate resilience and the evidence needed for variety registration and release.

Continuing research theme

Multi-environment performance, G×E and stability

Research on how crop genotypes perform across environments, including work with fluted pumpkin, soybean and maize using AMMI, GGE biplots and other stability procedures.

Programme 05
Ongoing line of inquiry

Underutilised crops, diversity and food security

Work includes Bambara groundnut characterisation and a current line of inquiry into awareness, consumption and desirable traits of underutilised legumes among Nigerian youths.

In development & scientific validation

Research technology and scientific validation

Exploring how design-aware software and bounded AI can support agricultural analysis without replacing experimental logic, assumptions checking or researcher judgement. VivaSense is the principal platform through which this work is being developed and validated.
